Asparagus

Asparagus is the most recent addition to our farm.  Planted for the first time in 2011, we began harvesting in the spring of 2013.  It will be available at our farm in 2 lb. packages.  Feel free to call ahead to reserve your order.

We harvest our asparagus by snapping it at its “snapping point.”  The snapping point is the lowest spot on the stalk that has not yet become fibrous.  Most asparagus purchased in the stores is cut during harvest at the ground level, which is well below the Buy Fresh, Buy Local in PA Logosnapping point.  This means that you are paying for asparagus that is too tough and fibrous to eat.  Snapping the asparagus provides you with stalks that are fully edible without any wasted preparation time or money.  As always, we strive to bring you the highest quality produce that we can provide.

Asparagus is highly nutritious. One serving of asparagus (~5 spears) contains 20 calories, 0g fat, 0mg cholesterol, 0mg sodium, 5g carbohydrate, 2g dietary fiber, 2g sugars, 2g protein, 10% Vitamin A, 10% Vitamin C, 2% Calcium, 2% Iron, and 60% folic acid (B-complex vitamin).1
